A Sleek(-Pricing) Comparison between Moto G5 Plus and Honor Pro 8

Moto G5 Plus

Price £249

What’s the story?

The Moto G has been our top sub £200 phone for years now and the excellent G5 keeps up that trend. But G5 Plus offers a few improved specs and a very slightly larger screen but it’s not immediately obvious that these upgrades are worth the price hike. Still it’s over £200 cheaper than the Honor 8 Pro and while the whole idea of getting a budget phone is that you have to make some spec sacrifices in order to save your money, this Moto still gives you cool additions such as 4K video shooting and Turbo Power charging.

A Negative Point

  1. In the Smartphone world ‘Plus’ usually means you get a 5.5 inches display at least. But despite being10 gram heavier than the £159 standard model the G5 Plus has a 5.2 inches screen only 0.2 inches bigger. And while most Plus phones get a resolution bump too, the G5 Plus is stuck at plain HD.

Some Plus Points

  1. The camera mean while, has dual-pixel autofocus. Combined with an f/1.7 lens, it can take some truly stunning photos in natural sunlight. Take it inside, though, and the drop in quality is considerable.
  2. The G5 Plus is a cut above most budgets Smartphone, the extra features aren’t enough to make it a worthwhile buy a head of the regular MotoG5. If you really do want to go large you might be better off coughing up for the Honor.
  3. The Turbo Power charger you’ll get six hours of battery life from just 15 minutes hooked up to the mains.

Honor 8 Pro

Price £475

What’s the story?

The 8 Pro is a premium phablet with the kind of specs that would put most flagships to shame. It has Dual cameras and a super fast CPU. Naturally Stunning screen? A 5.7 inches screen with Quad HD panel.  Yes, it does cost substantially more than the Moto G5 Plus but when it has specs that are able to push the likes of the Huawei Mate 9, Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and Apple iPhone7 Plus, it still feels like a mega bargain phone not that you’d be able to tell from the stunning build quality.

Only Plus Points

  1. A 5.7 inches screen leaves lots of room for pixels, and Honor has delivered the 8 Pro has a 2560 x 1440panel.There’s plenty of detail for photos and videos and you’ll struggle to get better for less cash.
  2. Camera wise this Honor packs two 12MP sensors with f/2.2lenses. With one sensor handling colour and the other dedicated to black and white, it can capture low light images that absolutely trounce those from the G5 Plus.
  3. The Honor 8 Pro is a truly impressive phablet with the kind of specs that would have cost £600 – 700 just a year or two ago. It’s got all the flagship features you could hope for as well as an attractive design and is easily worth the extra cash over the Moto if you can possibly spare it.
